As the linked New York Times Article report documents, it appears there is bipartisan support for a bill that will provide additional funding for twenty-six new VA medical facilities. More importantly, the Bill provides for additional funding and support for veterans to see private medical care if they live in locations more than 40 miles from the nearest VA medical facility or are experiencing longer-than-anticipated wait times for coverage. There a number of moving pieces that will need to be addressed to successfully implement such legislation (personally, I see the immediate need for additional staffing and support for the fee basis coordinator at each VAMC); however, this is a necessary step in the right direction to alleviate the most immediate issues facing the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
