On April 25, 2013, Senators Bernie Sangers (I-Vt.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.), introduced The Homeless Veterans Prevention Act of 2013. The bill, which can be accessed at The Homeless Veterans Prevention Act of 2013, is aimed at eliminating veteran homelessness by 2015 and includes: (1) expanded availability of legal services to homeless veterans; (2) increased transitional housing for homeless women veterans; (3) continued and permanent authorization of the Department of Labor Incarcerated Veterans Transition Program; (4) expansion of transitional housing, to include the children of homeless veterans; (5) expanded eligibility of the Homeless Veterans Dental Program; and (6) re-authorization of various VA programs for homeless veteran housing and employment programs.
Efforts to reduce veterans homelessness are not only be drafted at federal level. The following Chicago Daily Chronicle article documents a unique state public housing complex being built exclusively for homeless military veterans. The complex will encompass both housing units, a business center, access to job training, family counseling, and mental health screening.
