Did you know that Union County has an Advisory Board on the Disabled that advises County government on issues related to people with disabilities? The Board has eleven members, and Linda Ershow-Levenberg has just been appointed to the Board. Members who receive information from the public about disability-related challenges will present the information to the County Commissioners for evaluation and potential action.
Here are some initiatives that should be of interest to persons with disabilities and those who assist or care for them.
The Abilities Expo 2021 is coming soon to the NJ Exhibition and Expo Center in Edison on October 1-3, 2021. At least 175 vendors are expected. I will be volunteering at the Council table on Sunday October 3. About ten years ago, a client of mine who could no longer walk on her own discovered an astounding and amazing wheelchair at the Expo that essentially raised her into a secure standing position so that she could then maneuver or “drive” herself around in an upright position. It was life-changing.
Union County recently completed a massive audit of the accessibility of its government buildings. The County is now getting into year two of an ADA Plan to address what may be required to create or improve accessibility throughout the County.
Union County residents who are home bound or have difficulty leaving their home can use a new toll-free number to make an appointment to receive a COVID-19 vaccination at home. The number to call is 1-833-256-2478, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Also, Mobile van transportation is available to persons who have mobility deficits and need to get to a COVID-19 testing site. Call the Union County Division on Aging and Disability Resource Center for information.
